WA Organizations Urged to Sign SNAP Support Letter

by Gregory W. Spearing

From the Food Resources Action Center:

WA Organizations Urged to Sign SNAP Support Letter to WA Congressional Delegation

The statement and letter below is regarding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Please read and sign if you agree. To sign  please click here

Every five years, Congress renews the Farm Bill, a comprehensive piece of legislation that includes, among other items, reauthorization of SNAP/Food Stamps.  This year, the Farm Bill is up for reauthorization.

As Farm Bill deliberations heat up, we need to demonstrate strong and diverse Washington support for SNAP.  Below is a sign on letter for WA organizations that urges the WA Congressional delegation to strengthen and protect SNAP, and to oppose any proposals to cap or reduce funding, restrict eligibility or reduce benefits in SNAP.

Click here for a PDF version of the letter. The deadline to sign on to the letter is April 6, 2012.

Take Action:

  1. Sign your Washington organization onto this critical letter urging the WA Congressional delegation to strengthen and protect SNAP.
  2. Please distribute the letter and encourage other WA groups in your network to sign.

We Don’t Need No Education – NYTimes.com

Paul Krugman has a great column today, about where the U.S. is going in education.  From one of the sources he uses, I found this report on what the proposed GOP budget cuts will mean for education in Washington State in 2013-2014; Pell grants will be cut $47,300,000, affecting an estimated 6,495 Wa. state students.

House Passes Republican Congressman Paul Ryan’s Proposed 2013 Budget

House passes Republican Congressman Paul Ryan’s proposed 2013 budget. Should we in Yakima and central Washington be worried? Only if your well being is connected to the well being of Yakima and central Washington.

According to Washington state Employment Security economist Ken Maseck, 1 in 4 local jobs are directly tied to agriculture. That’s huge.

More than 30,000 local jobs are derived directly from agriculture.

The Washington Budget Standoff

by ehungate

By Eleanor Hungate

The Senate leadership demands that charter schools be funded. Washington voters have rejected charter schools three times. Charter schools are the private corporate alternative to public education. Voters don’t like it that successful charter schools spend much more per pupil, pay teachers less and are privately administered; and besides, most voters truly like their neighborhood schools. The charter schools concept appeals mostly to those who have been sold a bill of goods about shrinking government, busting unions, ending public education and privatizing government functions so that taxpayers can pay corporations to perform those same functions.

The Senate leadership demands that the state skip a pension plan payment for the entire year. It is a bad idea to dip into the trust fund piggy bank
